Penn's Wood Products, Inc. Tom Turpin Yelper trumpet call later and shorter model with no ferruleEntry/Object ID
PTC006A0016Description
Frank R. Piper established Penn's Woods Products, Inc. after buying Roger Latham's turkey call business in 1965. Latham had started his business by acquiring the turkey call portion of legendary Tom Turpin's callmaking business in 1957. The "Turpin-style" trumpet yelper thus had a chain of custody through that ownership, which Penn's Woods heavily leveraged in naming its calls and advertising its products. Penn's Woods followed Latham's example by making its trumpets from walnut, a domestically available wood. Penn's Woods calls did not have a finish applied and the interior of the calls were somewhat rough (unsanded). Most Penn's Woods trumpets had an aluminum ferrule, but this later model had no ferrule at all and was shorter than previous Tom Turpin Yelpers. The Delrin mouthpiece with a rubber lipstop (or "stopper") was also smaller than the previously used models. However, this variant of the call was still labeled as the Model 6603 but lacked a sticker, as was common on earlier calls.Collection
