Description

Frank R. Piper established Penn's Woods Products, Inc. after buying Roger Latham's turkey call business in 1965. Latham had started his business by acquiring the turkey call portion of legendary Tom Turpin's callmaking business in 1957. The "Turpin-style" trumpet yelper thus had a chain of custody through that ownership, which Penn's Woods heavily leveraged in naming its calls and advertising its products. Penn's Woods followed Latham's example by making its trumpets from walnut, a domestically available wood. Penn's Woods calls did not have a finish applied and the interior of the calls were somewhat rough (unsanded). Whereas Turpin and Latham mostly used brass ferrules, the Penn's Woods trumpets utilized aluminum. Delrin mouthpieces with a rubber lipstop (or "stopper") rounded out the calls. This particular variant of the Model 6603 had a bronze sticker labeled "Turkey Call, Tom Turpin Yelper" and had the company address.
