Penn's Woods Products, Inc. Roger Latham True-Tone Box CallEntry/Object ID
PTC006A0001Description
Frank R. Piper established Penn's Woods Products, Inc. after buying Roger Latham's turkey call business in 1965. Latham had started his business by acquiring the turkey call portion of legendary Tom Turpin's callmaking business in 1957. The "Turpin-style" box thus had a chain of custody through that ownership, which Penn's Woods heavily leveraged in naming its calls and advertising its products. The "Roger Latham True-Tone Box Call" was made of walnut, and the printing on the box was gold. Later models of the call had a hole in the paddle through which a leather strap could be secured, rendering the call silent during transport. The original "standard" Tom Turpin box (no handle on the base as in Turpin's Hen Boxes) generally had three or four nails around the “top hat” (screw insert). Latham's had two, and the Penn's Woods models had no nails as the screw insert was glued in. The latter model pictured was made by Penn's Woods and was signed by Piper and backdated 02-27-'66', which commemorates the actual launch of this product. Wayne Bailey, a renowned wild turkey biologist, was a Penn's Woods prostaffer and signed this call on 2-23-02 during its production run.Collection
