Description

The Professional Turkey Callers Association of America was organized to promote the culture of wild turkey calling competitions and turkey hunting. It was organized in 1982 and may also have been known as (or was a division of) the American Turkey Hunters Association. We have seen at least six issues of the publication "The Turkey Hunter" (not to be confused with another magazine of the same name by Spearman Publishing & Printing. Ben Rodgers, Lee & Bob Clark were the founders, and the American Turkey Hunters Association was headquartered in Mansfield, PA. Lee, Doug Camp, and others were contributors to the organization's publication. The mission stated they were "dedicated to the serious turkey hunter throughout the United States and provides many opportunties for the professional and non-professional turkey hunter." Recognizing the explosion of growth in turkey hunting, this group had a hunter host exchange program and (as indicated in the name) had activities supporting calling competitions; and they hosted an All-American Turkey Calling Championship. The book The Grand Spring Hunt by Bart Jacob and Ben Conger records that the organization also sponsored a youth program.
