Home video revolutionized the hunting industry by bringing hunts into people's living rooms for on-demand viewing. As a result, many hunting product companies began creating content to showcase their turkey calls and gear, turning the stars of these videos into celebrities. This trend began in 1985, and this 90 minute video was among the first few dozen turkey hunting tapes made, Brent Rogers told the story of how Primos launched The TRUTH video series in his book Yelp & Gobble, Inc. Will Primos said, “Cuz (Ronnie Strickland) was our first full-time camera guy. He came on board and helped with our first all-hunting video, “The Truth About Spring Turkey Hunting.” I bought him a truck and told him not to wait on me, as I had a day job, and to record whoever he could get to go, and he recorded twelve kills during 1987.” As the video was going through production for the eventual release in 1988, they decided to present themselves honestly. Primos did not want to be doing re-shoots and re-enactments, which some companies didn’t avoid. He tried to connect hunters to the experience, warts and all. Those bungled birds, the misses, and all the unexpected occurrences humanized Team PRIMOS®. Viewers loved it!
The story of how the PRIMOS® video series ultimately got named is legendary. Will Primos asked his inner circle, “What are we gonna call it?” Cuz replied to this, “All I know is it’s the truth.” Primos said, “That’s it!” People may not know that the following year after the hunts were complete and they were working on the second release of their hunting chronicles, it was Cuz who asked, “What are we gonna call it?” Primos replied, “Are you crazy? It is “The Truth II!” Some may notice two titles for the first PRIMOS® videotape in “The Truth” series. The original release from 1988 was titled “The Truth,” but after The Truth II” was launched, the original was re-released as “The Truth I.”
“The video series really helped take us to the next level,” Primos told me. Initially, the company made just enough tapes to sell to sporting goods stores for $44.99 each. The stores, in turn, would rent the tape out. Remember that this was during the early days of home video, and many people didn’t yet own a VCR player and had to rent one along with the tape.
Video technology invited Will, Jimmy, and the growing PRIMOS® team into people’s homes. The way they authentically presented themselves resonated with viewers, and the business prospered. Jimmy again credited their approach to their Grandfather Pop and said, “He taught us to treat people right, to be honest, and to “do unto others,” and that came through on our videos. People liked us and identified with us.” People would tell the PRIMOS® team, “Y’all are just like us!” This is a great example of how powerful it can be to connect to viewers through the screen. There are many who find more than entertainment value in productions like “The Truth.” For some, it is how they get education and inspiration.
This was Primos Model 406. The sleeves containing the videotape were marketing tools, often colorful and with images and titles that greatly appealed to their intended audience.Collection
