Historically, turkey calling competitions were gathering places for turkey hunters. Not only was it to test the skills of competitive callers, but such events also afforded new hunters a place to learn. We can look back at those competitions and recognize the names of many legends-some now departed- who signed the judging forms pictured in these photos. Some were writers, some were biologists, some were callmakers, some were former competitive callers-all were turkey hunters! Seeing the types of calls that contestants had to vocalize is interesting, and they have changed over time. These sheets are courtesy of the Don Heckman estate through his daughter, Brenda Gossard; the man was a dedicated NWTF volunteer who worked tirelessly as a volunteer, including judging many calling contests.Collection
