Matthew Fulkerson, a 42-year-old craftsman and turkey hunting enthusiast from Central Indiana, has established himself as a respected maker of custom turkey calls, particularly in the traditional Turpin style.
His journey into call making began in 2017, rooted in a deep passion for turkey hunting. Fulkerson has consistently built Turpin-style box calls throughout his career. This commitment traces back to his early experiences in the field: his mentor used a Penns Woods Roger Latham call to successfully call in Fulkerson's first turkey. The Roger Latham design, associated with the historic Penns Woods brand, inspired him and made the Turpin style—a classic, time-honored approach to box calls—a natural fit for his own work.
Fulkerson expanded his repertoire in 2021 by beginning to craft trumpet-style calls. He produces these in limited numbers, focusing primarily on his signature box designs.
In 2019, he entered the competitive world of custom call making, participating in events such as the NWTF Grand National Callmaking Competition. Since then, he has excelled in the Turpin category, securing wins five times—an accomplishment that highlights his skill in replicating and innovating within this traditional style.
His Turpin-style calls have evolved over the years. He started with a square-handle design before transitioning to more traditional round handles. His work is often recognized through his "M series," which progressed through models M1 to M3. Today, he offers refined options: a short-handled version, an old-style handled version, and a non-handled variant.
A hallmark of Fulkerson's calls is their distinctive aesthetic and symbolic elements. Many feature a turkey leg band incorporated into the handle, representing his strong devotion to the conservation of wild turkey populations. Tear drop inlays on the lid have become another signature touch, instantly identifying a call as one of his creations.
