Description

James Wray "Scatcher" (as coined by Jody Harrison years ago) Stitcher is 51 years old as of March 2026. He and his wife own a mobile dog grooming business. Before that, he was an owner-operator on a bread route for almost 25 years. Wray hunts whatever is in season, also enjoying fishing (especially catfishin') & gardening. He began making calls in 2016 as J&J Calls in Fredericksburg, VA, and now resides in Essex County, VA, where hiscurrent shop is. He has since switched the name to JWSCRATCHBOX. Rick Harro & Curtis Terrell were a big help in getting him started in call making. Now he is leaning more towards a folk art style and incorporating older and/or odd stuff and materials, like EW Tripp, Jake McCormac, etc. Wray's first calls were along the lines of a Rhodes-style scratch box, then he designed his own style from a dip can. He has done several variations of sawn & glued box calls, and did a version of a Cost Style for a while, and still does so on occasion. He came up with a new design in 2022 and has used it since. He primarily builds scratch box calls. Recently, he made a few incorporating barn roof tin & Corian and old wooden boat oars. He has made several box calls, cane yelpers, peg & slate & tongue calls over the years.
