Notes
Internet search revealed that in Victorian times napkin rings were used to identify individual napkins used over again at the table. This reduced laundry. At Christmas time they were often gifts or for weddings. They were often of silver plate or pewter and sometimes engraved with initials. When used pull the napkin toward the individual then place it to the left side of the place setting. A particularly Victorian invention.
