"Mascher's Improved Stereoscope - Philada. - Patent March 8th 1853"
John F. Mascher of Philadelphia patented this ingenious design in 1853. It is a stereo daguerreotype case (or stereo ambrotype case).
How the Case Actually Worked
The two circular, textured circles you see on that purple velvet lid aren't just decorative bumps—they are actually magnifying viewing lenses built into a folding inner flap.
A person would open the case.
They would flip up the inner leather/velvet panel containing those two lenses.
By looking through the lenses at the two slightly different side-by-side photographs, the viewer's brain would merge the images together to create a stunning, lifelike 3D effect.
It was the 1850s equivalent of a virtual reality headset! Because these cases were expensive and complex to manufacture, they are highly prized by photographica collectors today.
