You doubtless miss
the instrumental music, with
which these woods have hitherto
resounded. We have reluctant-
ly come to the conclusion that
we are too poor to hire a band.
Our refusal to hire music
must not be regarded as an
indication that we are indif-
ferent to it. At least a due
respect for the family will
not allow us to hold that
opinion, in view of that very
familiar Shakespearean an-
athema, against, "That man
that hath no music in himself."
Perhaps on the whole
the absence of the Band need
not be regretted. We have only
to furnish our own music in
order to be self supplying in
every respect. You have heard

that it is the custom in some
countries to hire professional
mourners at funerals, and
professional dancers for parties
of weddings. Perhaps from
some aspects it might appear
as ridiculous to hire music
makers for picnics. Our joy
ought to be as spontaneous
and as personal as our
grief. Perhaps until we
get rich enough to indulge
in the luxury of instrumental
soul stirring and martial
music, it might be well
enough to have a musical
leader appointed, so that our
programme in that respect be
not wholly improvised.
