Scope and Content

Walton Lake School This picture was painted by Mrs. Kenneth Strebel of Monroe, N.Y. in 1962. It was copied from a small photo taken years ago. This one room school building made of stone was erected on the west end of Walton Lake in 1856 by the early settlers of that neighborhood. Namely: Roe, Stevens, Fitzgerald, Bull, Heaton, Lawrence; perhaps others. Harrison Lawrence - being a mason placed the lintel over the front door and a flat stone at the door. Here the children were taught the three R's by competent teachers. Their writing, spelling and reading of good books is still spoken of these long years also methods of good behavior among others, Samuel Bull served as Trustee for 22 yrs while Seely Stevens served 55 yrs. The teachers also served many long years. Annually Alumni was held where old timers and friends met for picnic dinners. Days gone by were talked over, some with tears and some with smiles. Often a hundred assembled, photos, hand shaking and speeches were made. It became Neighbors Day. Date and cards were sent to those far away. The school was remodeled and the teachers Miss Holbert and Mrs. Jacamein found it a pleasure to teach until Law closed the school and pupils sent elsewhere. This school is among the oldest in Orange Co., and has many social memories with it.
