Mrs. Amy Bull Crist

Newburgh, New York
Dear Amy:
This past month I came into possession of a well-worn
campaign chest that belonged to one Lt. Edmund Llewellyn
Bull, Class of 1903, USMA, a chest he apparently had with
him in the Moro expedition in the Philippines. Though
he was born in New York, he seems to have come from a
Carolina family.
I know from talking to you and to Joan Bull Cooper of
Monroe, the wife of a former member of my department here,
that the Bull family connections spread far beyond the
limits of Orange County. So I am sending along the
obituary of Colonel Bull as it was printed in the 1941
alumni report because it may interest you and because
there might be, by chance, a closer connection than I
suppose.
The box (it compliments it to call it a campaign chest)
is of considerable size (36 x 40 x 26 inches deep) and
still stenciled "LT E L BULL 22d Infantry Ft VanBuren
Wash." It might make someone in the family an interesting
conversation piece--and wood box, perhaps. I did not
want to paint it over or make it into kindling without
offering it to you or yours. Gratis, of course.
Best regards. Sorry I will not be joining you for the
dinner for Ben Gilman on October 23d.
Sincerely,
[Signature: Jack Capps]
