Mrs. Genevieve G. Bull
Box 211
Central Valley, New York
Dear Mrs. Bull:
I sincerely regret that in writing this letter I must confirm the recent message announcing the sad news that your son, Captain Richard G. Bull, has been missing since 2 February 1952.
Our report states that Captain Bull was the pilot of a military aircraft, one of a flight of three which he led on a combat mission over Korea. During this mission while making a bomb run, your son was observed by his wingman to jettison his bombs short of the target. His aircraft then was seen to go into an inverted position and crash into the ground. The plane exploded and burned upon impact. No parts of the aircraft were seen to come off nor was the canopy jettisoned prior to the crash. No attempt by Captain Bull to leave the aircraft was observed.
The information received from the overseas commander indicates that in all probability, your son perished in the crash, however, the Department of the Air Force will continue to hold him in a missing status until his fate is ascertained. You will be advised immediately of any new information which we may receive.
Permit me to extend to you my heartfelt sympathy during this period of uncertainty.
Sincerely yours,
[Signature: John H. McCormick]
