Former Andrews Flyer Gets DFC, 4 Air Medals
First Lt. Richard G. Bull, former jet flight instructor at Andrews Air Base, recently was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and four air medals for service with the 8th Fighter-Bomber Wing in Korea.
In a surprise maneuver of the 8th Wing six Shooting Star Jets attacked an enemy column of 90 trucks and 10 tanks. The jets claimed more than 40 of the trucks destroyed, 20 damaged, one tank destroyed and 2 damaged.
Lt. Bull set up the pattern for the Wing that bombed, strafed and napalmed the red column on a mountain pass near Sinanju. The jets poured thousands of rounds of ammunition into the vehicles and the whole line was dotted with fires as the air fighters finished up.
Lt. Bull’s wife is the former Miss Lee Bruto, who is now chief hostess at the Naval Officers’ Club at the Bethesda Naval Hospital.
