Scope and Content

1. The Agreement (February 3, 1806) Images: 1495a, 1495d, 1495c, 1495b The Debt: Abraham Lent (a "Cooper" or barrel-maker) and his wife Jerusha borrow $105 from William Jackson. The Collateral: To secure the loan, the Lents "mortgage" a specific piece of land in the Town of Southfields. The Land: A parcel of 1.1 acres. The boundaries are described using "metes and bounds," starting at a "stake and stones" on the highway leading from Augusta Forge to Cornwall Landing, passing a White Oak tree, and running along the line of John Waggon. 2. The Execution & Recording (February 1806) Images: 1496c, 1496b, 1495f The Signing: Abraham and Jerusha Lent signed the document in the presence of witnesses Catherine Arthur and Jeremiah Clark. You can still see the dark remnants of the wax seals next to their names. The Protection of Rights: Judge Jeremiah Clark performed a "separate examination" of Jerusha Lent to ensure she wasn't being coerced into the deal by her husband. The Public Record: The deed was officially recorded on February 13, 1806, in Mortgage Book (Liber) E, page 409. 3. The Resolution (June–July 1808) Image: 1495e Payment in Full: Two years later, William Jackson appeared before a judge to confirm he had received "full satisfaction" (the $105 plus interest). Cancellation: The mortgage was officially cancelled on July 8, 1808, meaning the Lents now owned their 1.1 acres "free and clear."
