Wrote for My Young Friend E H 1823
Ebenezer Bull — — The 28th day of the 1st Month
Signed — Lily an Exile — For Liberty
Farewell — —
(This document contains the main body of the poem, titled "Dissipation".)
Dissipation
Not the jaws of Charybis nor hoarse Rocks of Scylla —
Not all the fell dangers that lurk in the deeps —
Not the Earth quakes broad Yawn Nor Volcanoes Lava —
Not the Pestilences Breath or the Hurricanes Sweep —
Not all the Grim Monsters that lurk through Creation
have caus'd such destruction Misry, & Woe
As from that Arch Dread of Mankind, Dissipation,
In the Sin-bred World incessantly flow —
'Tis a Vortex insatiate on whose Gidely Bosom
the Victim is whirl'd till his senses are Gone
Till lost to all Sense and the dictates of Reason
He lends Not One Effort to ever Return —
Ah! View on its surface the ruins of Genius
the wreck of the Scholar Christian and Friend
The learning the Wit and Graces that charm'd Us
In The mind drowning Bowl meet a Premature End —
Yes see drown'd in tears the disconsolate Mother
Lament the lost State of a Favorite Son
See the Husband and Wife the Sister & Brother
Mourn a father a Husband a Brother Undone —
Thomas Thomson An Exile
Farewell —
