New York Jan 3rd, 1858 Dear Brother Sam After a pleasant trip on the Cars we arrived safely home in good season, or at least Anna did for I went direct to the office. I found every thing as well as I could have wished. The Atlantic did not arrive until yesterday night, and yesterday was the first I had commenced work on her. I was very glad for I was troubled somewhat for fear something was wanted. All the folks at home were well. Mother had returned from her visit on the Island. He met Edwin and Parnell on the ferry boat, we said they were all well. Last night we had an invitation to Miss Telles. Em. & Hannah Thompson were there but we had some company, and did not go. I expect the girl will call on us today. Some gentlemen called at our house on New Years day, and left cards. They say it was very lively here on New Years day. So many Matin calls &c. Last night it commenced snowing and I really thought we were going to have some sleighing in the City but this morning dispelled the illusion, for only about half an inch in depth had fallen, just enough to make it muddy and unpleasant again. I hope you had a good storm, enough to make sleighing again. I really felt sorry for the poor horses dragging our baggage, but for all that I enjoyed my visit with you very much, and my mouth fairly waters now for some of those good pancakes & gravy. Tell Hannah when she comes down to see us she must bring a cold one down for me. Anna cooked one of the chickens yesterday, and it was first rate, and we are very much obliged. I hope Mother’s cold or cough is no worse, and tell her if she wants any more candy I will send it to her, or anything else, that she thinks will do her good. I wish she and Hannah would come…
