Dear Cousin Ellen.
No doubt- you will think I am the-one that- ought- to be scolded
for not answering your letter-sooner- but the fact is I have
not had much of interest- to write- about- this winter. It has
been cold disagreeable weather- most- of the time since Christmas.
after the- first- of Jan we had good sleighing till about- the-
middle of Feb, since then the-snow has thawed off. and
it- has been slippery and bad going. yesterday we had another
snow storm but I dont- think it- will make very good sleighing
-it- is too light- does not- pack down enough. I will be so
glad when the- weather gets settled and it- comes spring again
-Saturday I received a letter from Sarah Hurlihy- you know she
lives in Peckville Pa. she wrote me- some very sad news. perhaps
you have heard it- though- the-death- of Frances Brundage. she
was sick nine weeks with several different- diseases, she left- a young
babe. It- must be hard for Aunt- to lose her. for she has
always lived so near where they could see her every day.
how well I can remember how she looked when we were all
at your house, I thought- then I might- perhaps see her again some
time, but it- seems it- was not- to be so. so many of our
friends have died since we were east- I have heard of the death
of seventeen- that- we saw that-summer. Ed is here part- of the time. for
the past- two months he has done nothing but- run about- he
will go as long as he can stand it- then he will come here and
lay around and sleep for a day and night- then he will start-
again- we have tried our best-to get- rid of him but- he wont-
stay away. I have talked to him and tried to have him do
different- but nothing I can say will make any impression
so I have givin it- up. and want-him to go and stay away from me.
he is a big stout- fellow and could earn lots of money if he would
only work and save what- he earned he wants to go to Neb. but he
will have to earn the- money before he can go I want- him to go but-
think it- will be a bad thing for Charlie if he does. you wrote that-
Kate talked of marrying again- when is that- to happen. I hope she will
do well- and also hope she will get- some one that- can train her
other boy so he will not- grow up such a scalawag as Ed is.
Father is well this winter- though still very lame. he does not- go
out- much. I must- close now for the want-of more room. tell Ida I will write
to her before long. is her sister there yet.
love to All. Yours Libby A. L.
