William Bull and Sarah Wells Stone House Association, Bull PicnicScope and Content
The 91st Annual Bull Picnic was held on Saturday, August 23, 1958, at the historic Bull Stone House in Hamptonburgh, New York. The picnic serves as a gathering for the descendants of William Bull and Sarah Wells.
Event Highlights and Logistics
Schedule: A basket luncheon began at 12:00 P.M., followed by the Annual Meeting at 2:00 P.M..
New Tradition: This era marked a shift from a weekday to the fourth Saturday of August to accommodate those who work or travel from long distances, such as Alaska and Canada.
Venue: The stone house, built in 1722, is located near the Sarah Wells Trail. The picnic is held "rain or shine," using the house and barn as shelter if necessary.
Association Business
Insurance Decisions: The Board of Managers recently voted to increase fire insurance coverage to a replacement cost of $72,000. This decision was based on an engineer's appraisal to ensure the house could be rebuilt with like materials if destroyed.
Elections: Three managers were up for election to three-year terms: Earl Dickerson, Phebe Bull Slaughter, and Henry G. Parry, Jr..
Future Planning: The Association is preparing to participate in the 1959 Hudson-Champlain Celebration, marking the 350th anniversary of those historic voyages.
Financial Status
The Association maintains several funds to ensure its longevity:
General Fund: Ended the fiscal year (June 30, 1958) with a balance of $771.26.
Endowment Fund: Reached a balance of $8,688.01. This fund is supported by memorial gifts, including recent bequests from Jesse F. Zabriskie ($300) and Catherine A. Bull ($50).
Genealogy Fund: Holds $469.29 to support family history research.
Family Records
The Association continues to update its mailing list and genealogical records. Recent probate work for Catherine A. Bull, who died at age 85, led to the discovery of many new items for the family genealogy due to the extensive search for her numerous first cousins.
