Sheet 6 to Newwindsor, and on the second morning, after leaving New York, they unship’t their Little Cargo, at the Water side... of the tide waters of the Hudson River, (and what may be thought a Little singular, The Landing at Newwindsor, was called the “Water Side” and face of the Market, By the inhabitants of Wawayanda, for more than Half a century afterwards) —— However, After Unshiping, at the “Waterside,” and making Every Necessary Arrangement for their Journey, They started as early, as possible, from the Hudson River, with their Little All —— Under the Direction, of their Faithful Indian Guides... and arrived, The first Day, to the East Bank of the Otter Creek, or Kill, nearly opposite, to where, Christopher Denn, had selected a Site for his Residence —— The stream Being too high to Ford, —— no Canoe... and Night overtaking them, they were necessitated to Encamp for the first Night, in the Goshen of Wawayanda Under the Boughs of A Beech tree... But for fear of the Rattle Snake, the Workmen cut crotches, Drove them into the Ground, Cut Poles, and Laid them Across, With some Brush over them, upon Which, they spread their Bedding; After Which, they took some Refreshment, to Recruit them from a fatigueing Days Journey of near twenty miles As an Evening Repast, —— when they Lay down to Rest, on their New Constructed Bedsteads —— Where the Beech tree Boughs, Which served as A Canopy to keep off the Dews of Heaven... Where they Received All things Considered... A Peaceful & Comfortable Nights Rest... —— But as the Morning Light Appeared... —— The Workmen Was up, Cutting Logs, of Light wood (as Sarah Called them) made a temporary Raft, in the most Expeditious manner —— slid over With their tools, and went to work, on the spot, where Christopher Denn had fixed His site... Under the Direction of these friendly and kind Natives of the Wilderness... —— Who had Long Wished to see, the White People, settle among them as Neighbours, and for Which purpose, their Lands were sold to the White People. Sheet 7 White People, And Which, they Were Now About to Realize; Leaving Sarah, With some Assistance, to Raft over, Across the Otter kill, Her Household Charge... Which she Did With Some Dexterity —— for Being accustomed, in Going, from staten island to New York in a Market Boat, she had Learned the Use of the Paddle... and after, thus ferrying across the Otter kill, Her Household Goods & provisions The Live Stock, Horses & Cows Were Forded Over... And the Horses Let Loose With the Cows, to Graze, with Bells on, By Which means, they might the more readily be found. Being Thus, all safely Landed, Sarah Caused a fire to be made, by the side of a Log, in Order to prepare, for the Victualling, these Workmen in the Wilderness, by way of Cookery... When the Men were called Around Her, to take A Cold Relish of Provision, as Breakfast —— for the Morning, At their New Home; After Breakfast, some of these friendly indians, Selected, and gathered some wild plants Which Grew Abundantly, on the flat and moist ground Along the Otter kill... and assured Her, they were a good Wholsom and agreeable food, When Cooked with salt, meat, particularly that wild plant, Called Nether... —— And she Acted accordingly, Which made them, a fine Mess of Pottage for Dinner —— While the Men, With the indians, Were Building A Temporary Hut, Or Rather A Wigwam, in the most Expeditious Manner... Cut crotches, set them in the ground With Poles across on them —— Cut & split Palisades, jointed up as close as possible, setting one End, in the ground —— Leaning them in a Little, While the Bark, served to Cover the Roof, and all Compleated Before Night, When kindling a fire in the centre of the Wigwam, to Dry the inside of the Palisades, and moving in their Household goods & Provision in this New and Spacious Building, of a Few hours Work —— Where all was safe, from the inclemency of Bad Weather Where one and All, with Heart full of Glee, Elated with Joy, for their Accomplishment... for no Serious Accident had happened them from the time they Left the City of New York —— in Their Hazardous Expedition —— —— Where they Began to talk About, What they might have for Their Evenings Repast —— as they now had Begon House keeping, they would have some warm bread & sheaving baked in a pan
