Scope and Content

Character, of the Learned, in their Varnished Whitewash, of Rhetorick, which serves, as the Artificial and insidious means, to conceal, the Barbarity of Civilized High-Life... With Which, & With whom, we had been Accustomed & Associated with, & from Habit, had become with Us, a kind of Second Nature... ———— But we Detected Ourselves and Repented, of the Murderous Folly, of imitating the Fashion of High-life --- We could not stay Where we was... Something ^else must be Done... Yet if Possible; to Live & Die together and conceal our woe if Elizabeth, could compose herself, a few moments I would get some ^female confidential friend, to come & stay with Her, while I might find some means to meet, or pursue Sarah... either to meet Her on Horseback as we had assured & flattered Her, or to pursue, By Water up the Hudson River, in order to find Her some -where, or Learn the Lost of Her. ----- Which I Did, and then went to seek the means for our Departure; as my own Credit ^was Lost, But in Name I was obliged to communicate my views & wishes, to some of my Patentee friends, ^as we they who made my Case their own, who, in the Most friendly & obliging manner, wished me to give myself no further concern, ^how to get off; But to Return to Elizabeth and make Her as easy as possible, and Assist Her in getting Ready --- And we will Endeavour to get Everything Ready, ^said they for Your Journey, and meet you on the Ferry Stair, as we Did Last Evening, and they acted accordingly; furnished us, with two Saddle Horses with Bells, ^with a woman & a Man, Hunting Saddles, Saddle-bags and Portmanteau’s for Each Horse, one pair of Saddle-bags, were filled with the Choicest provisions for our Journey. ----- The other Saddle bag and Portmanteau’s, were Brought to Us, at our Lodge -room, to be filled with our Clothing, and what Ever we chose to place with them, and where they had rolled up several Medicinal Phials of Cordials, such as Hartshorn, Peppermint, Pennyroyal, &c together, with a small Cannister— Transcription of Sheet 8 (Marked "9" at top) — Cheering & Smiling as the Men Appeared, in the accomplishment, of their Engagements ----- There was, Nevertheless, A Serious, Dejected — and Melancholy Cloud, Hovering over Sarah’s senses... That she could & would have preferred Weeping, Rather than Smiling, with the Cheerful Company She was Promiscuously mingling with — While she kept about Her work, to prevent a Disclosure of what she felt... Untill a more suitable opportunity might offer, to give Vent to Her feelings... ———— A Lonely female, a Young Girl in a Howling Wilderness... who could scarcely think Herself a Woman... yet knew of nothing wrong, as She said — Life was but Little more than a Blank Unfill’d The fate of an orphan child... she had But Little to hope... The place — the Wilderness — Had no appearance Like Home — and Therefore, had no Charms for Her... Place any young woman, she said, in Her situation & what could they think... if they thought at all their thoughts would be similar to Hers... while she was meditating... ^at her work and as it ^as it were, talking to Herself ^for -- in a serious mood... --- preparing the Evening --- - The Gloom of Night was Drawing near, the sun But Little Above the Horizon... --- in the Midst of these Gloomy Reveries... Busy as she was — Alas! an occurance took place -- she heard a Voice -- or thought she heard a Voice... that she knew; ^while she seemed as if she must sink to the ground... yet kept to work and thought it must be a Waking Dream ———— ^In her serious reveries and the Voice, Which she Heard — was, Sarah Sarah ^& of the Undistinguishable] — it was to Her Like an electrick shock... But on Hearing the Name of Sarah — a Third time, she Cast Her Eye to the Wigwam Door, and Behold, it was Christopher Denn and his wife on Horseback — in the stile they proposed to meet her, when they parted in New York — But this was too much for Sarah to Bear —- She Lost, all the fortitude, which she assumed for the ^& nights space of Days past... to give Vent to the feelings of the Heart --- that sensibility, with which, female Nature is Susceptible of ---
