Dear Brother.
I have many times thought of you since you left home for College and intended to have written you before this but have been prevented in one way & another. I am glad you have decided and that your father & mother have consented that you should go to College. I hope you appreciate the opportunity and will faithfully avail yourself of all the means you have to advance yourself in education to the fullest extent of your ability. I doubt not but that you do think that it is an invaluable privilege and will conscientiously do all in your power to progress in self culture in its many ways and forms. It will be a very great gratification to your parents brothers & friends to have you to come out right. It is no hard thing I imagine. If you have a complete college education you are thereby enabled to enter many a position that you otherwise could not. It is a

wonder to me why so many young men are rushing into the mercantile life. Not but what it has its fair inducements and many are better qualified for it than anything else but I imagine many think it "very fine" or a "touch above" and when they get into it find themselves very much mistaken. I think you have well chosen when you decided to pursue your dudies and I would say that if you are desirous you need have no apprehension of not completing them so far as a pecuniary view might be considered. I am glad you are learning French. Can you not also take up German? It is becoming quite as important as French. Do not lose your signing singing I mean, but don't let it run away with you. Some young men I know seem to be crazy about it and give it an undue importance. Be regular and constant in your attendance at Church on the Sabbath. I shall be glad to hear from you with an account of yourself, studies &c, for I must confess to some greenness about college life. Be careful in your choice of intimate companions and guard against vicious tendencies. Remember "keep thy heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life," "and as a man thinketh in his heart so is he". I suppose you write home frequently. Cultivate the art of letter writing. I dont suppose it is every son in your College that has so good and faithful mother for a correspondent as you have. Possibly she may have written you that I talked of going to Europe. I had about given it up but yestreday decided upon going & will sail 29" inst in Persia along with Mr. Smith. Our firm dissolves

Undated Letter from Catherine T. Jackson to William A. Jackson
Dear Willy - I wrote you last week but it seems you had not recd it when you wrote - it was no doubt owing to the irregularity of the mails - We have just returned from the funeral of Wellington Slaughter - Mr. Whigam and school were there - how solemn for one so young to be summoned from time into eternity - Mr. Hepberns text was Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth Do not dear Willy put off serving God and preparing for death - we have many solemn admonitions to be ready - and if we heed them not and turn a deaf ear we may be cut off in an hour when we think not - Your Father is not as well as when you left - Yesterday the Dr. bled him and he took medicine which leaves him very weak - his other side is somewhat weakened I fear he will never be well again - the disease rather gets worse - the storm coming and no help - perhaps he exerted himself too much - and such bitter cold weather thermometer one day down to twenty six or seven - Your Aunt Kate (Jno's wife) has been dangerously ill but now there is hopes of her recovery - Patrick left us for good, going off with the bad Julia and leaving his wife Mary only think I never suspected them - Yesterday the cold man

Charley came to us and engaged until the 1st of April so I hope we will now get along nicely - Charley boy will answer my purpose for the present - some hopes of Julia Desmond coming to me in the spring - Dan. I suppose will tell you all the news - I merely took up this little scrap of paper to let you know that I had not forgotten you I think of you much and know that your studies are arduous - ask for strength to perform your duty - in every thing by prayer and supplication we should make our requests unto God - really it has been cold with you - hope the worst is over - Alex. is well but complains of the cold
Write soon Your ever affectionate Mother

Letter from Daniel B. Jackson to William A. Jackson, dated February 16th, 1857.
Hamptonburgh Feb 16th 1857
Monday Evening
Dear Bro,
We have not heard from you in so long a time that we are beginning to think something is the matter with you. It will be three weeks from next Wednesday since we heard from you last - quite a space of time. So we concluded to send you this to hurry you up It might perhaps be owing to the irregularity of the mails or perhaps one of your letters may have been lost but at all events write as soon as you get this. By the way Pa wished me to tell you to write more frequently (once a week he says but arrange it to your circumstances) We have just rec'd a note from Uncle Augustus stating that Aunt Kate (John's wife) died last Saturday morning & is to be buried to morrow at 11 oc in morn. This surprised us most as much as it undoubtedly will you for we heard that she was nearly well having been quite low at one time from confinement, she had a little baby a girl of 3 or 4 weeks old.
You hav'nt heard I presume that our farm is let out on shares for a year from the 1st of

[Page 2 - Image 3775a.full.jpg]April next to a Mr. Marshall from Crawford who is working Milton's Bulls place at present. The arrangement is made & the agreement drawn up & signed He is to work the crops & we to attend to the dairy An addition is to be put to the west side of the tenant house & Uncle Bill to pick up stakes & duds & vacate the premises I had forgot to tell you in my last that we have hired old Johnson till the 1st of April, of course this arrangement makes work lighter all around; although he is slow & staid in his movements we get along very well with himBookstaver & myself have finished reading Cicero & Memorabilia last quarter & have taken up the Odyssey & Plautus Captives The latter is easy, interesting and amusing much more so than Juvenal & I should think would answer all its purposes in preparation for Union. How do College politics stand now? I presume however the most exciting times are over. Tom Lee (who has been home a month or more on account of illness) has heard the gratifying news that he is elected one of the junior orators; the $Z\Psi$'s control the Peithosopien & the $\Delta\Phi$'s the other so that there are just four of a kind. The Clinton Club is resuscitating again. there was a lecture delivered before it last Wednesday by Alexander Jack of Newburgh & Nathaniel Smith of the same place is expected to deliver one next Thursday eve & Singing school & debating club is flourishing at Campbell hall the

latter I have attended pretty regularly it is under the auspices of Mr. Hunting. I believe I have written till I am tired so I will stop-, Love from all-
