CITATION OF MR. AND MRS. BARTOW WRIGHT BULL, STONY FORD, ORANGE COUNTY, NEW YORK.
Orange County is one of the original ten colonial Counties of the State and from a very early date the sturdy name of Bull has a prominent place in the local annals.
On December 14, 1724, in the 11th year of the reign of George II, the German born English King, there was made a royal grant of land in Orange County to one William Bull. His son, William Bull followed him and he, in turn, had a son William Bull the third, who was a Captain in the War of the Revolution. It was this Captain Bull who after his return from the war built the present farm house in or about the year 1788. It was built of brick burned on the farm and the tradition is that the total money cost of this fine home, this mansion of that day, was $800.00.
The Captain born in 1751, died in 1817, leaving his son William the fourth, who was born in 1785, and died in 1833. His son, William Bull the fifth, was born in 1830, and lived to the ripe old age of 89 years, dying in 1919. It is his son, Bartow Wright Bull, and Mrs. Bull, present heads of the clan whom we honor tonight. For more than 212 years, the farm and the family have made important contributions to the local community and to the wider community of America. Captain William Bull, William the third, served with Washington at Valley Forge. In the earliest days there was a stockade fort upon the farm and during the Revolution, an arsenal was maintained there.
To the present generation, the farm has contributed four daughters but one son William Hulet Bull died in infancy. I am sorry that we may not look forward to another succession of William Bulls, but it is not too much to hope that through the distaff side, which remember, is not one bit less honorable than the male line, this ancient farm may go down across many generations.
Bartow Wright Bull and Mary Manning Bull, and all direct descents on this farm, it gives me great pleasure to declare you to be duly created members of this fellowship of Century Farmers.Relationships
