The Bull Family Reunion Picnic took place this Saturday with close to 300 descendents of William Bull and Sarah Wells congregating at the Bull Stone House, just off Sarah Wells Trail. Many firsts were established and six blue ribbons were awarded.
Betty Brown, who resides year round in the Bull Stone House, reported that for the first time, a group of people arrived at the Picnic via chartered bus. Ten families came with campers from Canada, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut, arriving a week before the Picnic to enjoy camping. Souvenirs were also provided for the first time as T-shirts, caps and sweat shirts with the Bull Stone House emblem printed on them.
Homer Bull received the blue ribbon for oldest man in attendance. Mr. Bull is 101 years old. The oldest woman ribbon was awarded to Anna Johnson. She is 89 years old. Meredith Cocks received the blue ribbon for youngest at two months, 14 days. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Bull received the ribbon for having traveled the furthest, coming from Carlsbad, California. It was their first time at the picnic. A blue ribbon was awarded to Corinna Bull Brown, who is 74, for the most picnics attended. She never missed a picnic, attending 74. A final ribbon was awarded to the couple married the longest. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Oom have been married 65 years. This was their first picnic.
The descendents voted to change the date of their annual reunion picnic to the third Saturday of August, rather than the fourth. More and more people were having difficulty attending the picnic with colleges and secondary schools beginning earlier than before.
Betty Brown (right), hostess of the Bull Family Reunion Picnic, was glad to see Harold and Esther Himes again. She met them at the Bull Family Reunion in Woodstock, Canada, recently. The Himeses left their home in Hibbing, Minnesota, on the Fourth of July. They have since traveled 5,000 miles to get to the Picnic in Hamptonburgh. They had met Betty Brown in Canada and learned about the Picnic, which they had never attended. "We never knew we had this many relatives," said Mrs. Himes. Near 300 descendents and family of William Bull and Sarah Wells attended the Picnic. The Himeses are 9th generation. "These two Reunions have been the highlight of our trip," concluded Mrs. Himes. They have 1,500 miles to go to get home.
