Image 1: Chicago 1 Sept 1837 Dear Sir An opportunity offers for sending you a short discription of my performance in Illinois. I went out on Fox river (about 40 miles from Chicago) & have been their ever since to work the most of the time for Judge Willson. I hired with him the first of march last for twenty two Dollars per month for one year — I bought me a claim of two hundred & forty acres for which I have & am to pay five hundred Dollars. It is well wattered, two living springs, besides the Dupage river running through it. Their was 6 acres of wheat on it when I bought it, & I have had Eighteen acres more broke. 80 acres timber, the rest prairie. You spoke about sending me the money if I should want it; now if you can send me the balance this fall or as soon as convenient, it will oblige me verry much, for I can buy me a team thirty per cent cheaper this winter than I can next spring. I expect to farm it next spring — I should like to hear wheather you wrote to my Father since I came away, & if you have not, it will oblige me if you will. I should be glad to hear from us as soon as this comes to hand if you please — If you send me the money, I wish you to deposite it in the Newburgh Bank and send a certificate of Deposite made payable to the order of Moseley & McCord. Enclose it in a letter and direct it to Moseley & McCord, Chicago. Respectfully Yours &c Patrick Russell (?)
