Headline: Hundreds celebrate at Bull family reunion By Sheldon Scruggs
Campbell Hall — More than 300 members of a prominent Orange County family converged Aug. 20 for the 138th Bull family reunion at the old stone house their ancestor, William Bull, and his wife, Sarah Wells, built in 1722.
Mike Brown and his wife, Betty, live in that house today. A former justice of the peace for the Town of Hamptonburgh, Brown is the curator of the 283-year-old house and museum. He organized the reunion and played host to family members who came from as far west as the state of Washington and as far south as Florida.
Carl Anderton and his daughter, Katrina, arrived from Kansas City, Mo., dressed in 19th-century clothing—the same their ancestors wore in 1868 for the first family picnic. Sarah Wells Bement-Ulungo, from Connecticut, won a ribbon for the best-made quilt. Named after her ancestor, she had this to say as a descendant: "The original Sarah Wells bore 12 children and lived to be 102 years old. I didn't have as many children as she, but I'm working on the years."
The families gathered for a group photo on the side of the house their forefathers built. Margaret Bull Jackson was lowered from the van by ramp in her wheelchair. At 96, she is the oldest living Bull descendant. Still lucid and sharp, she wore a smile that conveyed that she was glad to be there.
