Headline: Hill Hold Nominated For National Register
Subhead: 204 Year Old Bull-Jackson House Under Restoration
Hill-Hold, the Bull-Jackson House, has been recommended as a site worthy of inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places by the New York State Board for Historic Preservation. The nomination form has been submitted by the State to the Keeper of the Register in Washington, D.C.. The inclusion of Hill-Hold on the National Register will make the 204 year old stone house and farm eligible for U.S. Department of the Interior Historic Trust restoration grants-in-aid.
The Restoration Committee for Hill-Hold, chaired by Mrs. Amy Bull Crist, has been meeting regularly with architectural historian, Charles E. Peterson, A.I.A., of Philadelphia, to recommend restoration procedures. Some furnishings have been purchased, but several valuable furnishings have been donated or loaned to the County for use in the restoration.
Restoration of the dining room walls, ceilings, floors and fireplace by Howard Armbruster of the park staff is nearing completion. The committee is awaiting completion of an archaeological study and master plan of the 189-acre farm before recommending a development plan.
The stone house, tenant farmhouse, barns and other outbuildings, together with the complete 189-acre farm, was donated to the County by Margaret Eleanor Jackson, a descendant of Thomas Bull, who constructed the house in 1769. In recognition of the generous gift, the county named its whole 652-acre park in Hamptonburgh after Thomas Bull.
New Facilities Dedicated In Thomas Bull Park
Six new facilities and a road were dedicated at the Thomas Bull Memorial Park on October 25. The new facilities included a six-acre pond, pond service building, six tennis courts, a horseback riding, and night lighting of the ski slope.
