Charlie Alonge lost his friend Billy Partington, a Marlborough native, to the Vietnam War. Alonge never forgot him.
Today, Alonge, a member of Rolling Thunder, makes sure that those who served and have died are never forgotten along with the rest of the members. With this mission in mind and wanting to honor his friend's sacrifice, Alonge gained the inspiration to contact government officials and politicians for the placement of road signs, bearing the names of those lost, on the streets of Marlborough.
Choosing a design for these street sign memorials was a no-brainer; the Purple Heart Medal. The medal is reserved for those such as Alonge's friend Partington and another Marlborough native, Robert Bull II, who also lost his life in the Vietnam War. If you drive up Bloom Street or Western Avenue you will see the street sign memorial to Capt. Robert Bull II and to LCPL William J. Partington. The sacrifice these men made for their country is finally honored and in a most appropriate way right in their hometown.
