BULL HOUSE NEARLY 100 YEARS OLD Replaced Wooden Structure Which Was Recently Torn Down. Will Erect Garage On Former Site.
The attention of the Historic Society of Middletown and the Wallkill Precinct has been called to a matter of interest to many residents of the Town of Wallkill and especially to members of the well-known Bull family of this county. On the premises at Circleville occupied and owned by Judge Alfred Jones, for over 100 years has stood a frame building which has just been torn down. It stood at the north end of the stone dwelling occupied by Mr. Jones, and this is its history, or partial history. It was erected, presumably, by Samuel Bull, the grandfather of Messrs. John T. and Emmet L. Bull of Circleville. When erected it stood on the south side of the road from Circleville to Middletown, opposite the present Kirch residence, on land now owned by former Alderman Lawrence Gunther. In it were born the late William and Robert Bull of Circleville. Just about 100 years ago it was removed from its original location to the spot in Circleville opposite the store and present postoffice, where other members of the past generation of the Samuel Bull family were born. Some five or six years after its removal, Samuel Bull erected the present stone house— in 1832, to be exact, according to figures in a stone in the building. In the frame structure lived the family while the stone building was being erected. In six years, therefore, the stone house will be 100 years old. When the wooden structure was erected, no one now living can tell. J. T. Bull, of Circleville, says it was many years old when removed from its original foundation, to its late base, and it is not a wild conjecture that its sesquicentennial is very near. Judge Jones, in razing the structure, was amazed at its substantial character. The beams and supports, in fact, every bit of timber except the siding was hewed from the rough timber in the woods, heavy, massive, of enormous dimensions, and apparently in good condition for another century. Judge Jones is to erect a garage on the site of the demolished building, and will use the timber from this old house in the making of the new structure.
