THE INDEPENDENT REPUBLICAN
THE 60th BULL FAMILY PICNIC Held Wednesday, August 31, at Old Stone House in Hamptonburgh
Father Time made a visit to Hamptonburgh Wednesday before last without his scythe. He brought laughing, happy people to the number of 247, as testified by the record, with Canadian cousins. The visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Lebaron R. Bull of Frederickton, New Brunswick, with their son Stewart, and friend, Mrs. Bailey, also of Frederickton, and Mr. Bull’s sister, Josephine Bull Shaw, of Toronto. Mr. Bull and his sister are great-grand-children of the Loyalist George Bull, who went from Orange County to the then province of Nova Scotia, after the ending of our Revolution. George Bull had served King George III throughout the war and was made a captain. He is still referred to as "the late Captain George" by his many descendants in New Brunswick. At least two of his grandchildren, Charles P. Bull and Florence Bull Perkins are still living in Woodstock, N. B., where in 1925, they extended a most cordial welcome to some of their Orange County kin.
When the Loyalists went to Canada in 1783, feelings ran high, fathers went one way, sons another, brother opposed brother. George Bull’s father, Thomas, also remained true to the crown and languished in Goshen jail for his convictions; but George’s brother Daniel fought with the colonists. Each went from his father’s stone house (still doing good service on the Goshen-Montgomery State road) to become a man of high repute and to found a huge family. Isolated visits separated by periods of many years have kept the distant branches in slight touch with each other, but now with the flight of time and the automobile, the "invisible" international boundary line has become invisible indeed, and when the Canadians enter the old Orange County houses built by their own forbears, it seems as though they were only coming home.
Richard Bull, youngest son of William and Sarah), and his wife, Jemima Budd and their children, Humphrey and Elizabeth, as well as William Bull (son of William and Sarah’s eldest son John) also went to Nova Scotia Loyalists. They settled in the south near the Bay of Fundy, while George went considerably further north to Woodstock.
Those at the Picnic were pleased to hear a letter from Stewart S. Boyce, of Smithtown, New Brunswick, of the Richard Bull branch, in which he said: "I am sending a small offering toward current expenses. I could have sent it in American currency only I think that as a member of the branch of the family which has always remained loyal to the crown of England, it is more fitting that I should send a bank note on which is stamped the portrait of our future King, H. R. H. Edward, Prince of Wales, and the coat of arms of our Dominion." The bank note in question was examined with great interest.
As is usually the case, many descendants were at the Picnic for the first time. Among such were Mrs. Anna Leeper Jordan, with her daughter, Mrs. Caroline Goodrich of Newburgh; Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Slaughter, and children of Middletown; Mrs. J. Kenneth Courtier of Washingtonville, her little daughter, Martha, and her sister, Miss Alice R. Brooks, with her mother and sister, Mrs. W. Rickey, of Warwick, R. D. 1, and Mrs. Wm. M. Kremyer and Mrs. Jas. D. Moore. Mrs. Everett Hulses, of Newburgh, born on February 14, 1927, was brought in a clothes-basket and seemed to be having a wonderful time.
Emma K. Boyd, of Brooklyn, a granddaughter of the late D. Kerr Bull, comes so seldom that it was a rare pleasure to see her with her sister, Mrs. Sparrow, of Ridgewood, N. J. With the latter came also her daughter, Miss Anne B. Page. Sparrow. The Rev. Charles Beattie Mowray, of Brooklyn, who is settled in Hudson, N. Y., also an infrequent visitor, came with his mother and sister, Mrs. Alexander Thompson and Miss Mary Thompson, from Thompson Ridge.
Mrs. Sarah Bull Dickerson, of Thompson Ridge and many of her children and their families were present. Mrs. Phoebe Ann Bull Van Aist, of Montgomery, though in her 80th year, attended, with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dunning, of Montgomery. Another octogenarian, Mrs. Emma L. Zabriskie, of North Hackensack, testified to her good health and spirits by driving up from New Jersey with her son, Jesse F. Zabriskie.
Although Miss Emma A. Walz, came from Houston, Texas, she was outdistanced by Frank Y. Bull, of Tacoma, Washington. Mr. Bull entertainingly acknowledged the award of a corner. Dr. Helen Slaughter, just returned from a course of medicine in Vienna, was in attendance. With her were Miss Anne B. Hegburn, of New York City, and Miss Matilda Blake, of New Paltz.
The Andrews and Hawkins families of Rutherford, N. J., were well represented. Mr. and Mrs. James V. Bull came over from New Jersey and brought their children. Mrs. James McClyung of Campbell Hall and Beakes Hill, of Middletown, were also present.
