PAGE SIX THE INDEPENDENT
61st ANNUAL BULL FAMILY PICNIC
President Hamlet S. Roe’s successful raising of the last $1,000 unpaid on the mortgage on the "Stone House" was the outstanding feature of Wednesday’s Picnic. Since the property was bought in 1921, $12,000 in cash had been raised and paid on account of the purchase price, leaving $1,000 due.
The Treasurer, Ernest M. Bull, who is usually present in person, was absent this year, but sent a letter suggesting that an effort be made to wipe out this last $1,000. He suggested that if 40 people subscribed $25 each, the debt would be paid.
President Roe, who told the family that they would never again have the opportunity to help pay off a mortgage on the "Stone House." He seemed to know just how to appeal to his audience for he got the first $700 in a very few minutes and quickly the rest followed. At once the gathering broke out into the doxology, which was sung just as it might have been by our grandparents. Next year we anticipate a glorious time burning the mortgage.
Another outstanding feature of the day was the presence of Sheldon Bull, of Buffalo, who had not attended a Picnic for over 50 years. He is a son of the late Dr. Alexander Thompson Bull, of Buffalo, and grandson of Milton Bull, deceased, of Bullville. Mr. Bull addressed his kin and kept them in gales of laughter with amusing family anecdotes of prominent members of the family long since gone to their reward, but well remembered by many present. He spoke of Ebenezer Bull, father of the late William Bull, of the "Stone House," of the "late Captain George," and of Turah Bull, mother of the Rev. Dr. Bull, of Stony Ford, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Newburgh for 48 years, and of his wife, Mary Bull, of Christopher Mould, of Montgomery, and his wife, Martha Bull, of D. Kerr Bull, of Middletown. These were all outstanding figures in their generation and the happy and familiar summoning of them to memory by Mr. Bull’s words touching on their sterling integrity or whimsical spirit of fun gave great pleasure to his hearers. Notwithstanding his 50 years of absence, Mr. Bull found himself thoroughly at home and in fact with boyhood friends, notably James W. Bull, of Easton and Howard W. Connelly, of Brooklyn. As always there were those who had never come before; among them, Mrs. Pembroke W. Pitt, of Washing- ton, D. C., and her brother, Harry Beardsley Allen, of New York; Mr. and Mrs. James F. Jeffers, of War- wick R. D. 1, and Mr. and Mrs. Motheral, of Westfield, N. J. Mrs. S. D. Goetchious of Staunton, Va., received the blue ribbon for coming the greatest distance. Mrs. C. D. Gardner, of Middletown, in her 90th year, was the oldest present. Mrs. Roma L. Zahreisen, daughter [...cut off...]
