Middletown Times Herald Aug. 29. 1940 Mrs. Crist Again Chosen Head of Bull Association HAMPTONBURG-Mrs. Amy Bull Crist of Montgomery, recently elected School Superintendent for the First Supervisory District received another honor yesterday afternoon when she was chosen president of the Bull Family Association for her fifth consecutive term. Her designation took place during the annual reunion of the Bull family at the Bull Stone House in Hamptonburgh. Other officers elected with Mrs. Crist were Henry P. Bull of Middletown, vice president; E. M. Bull of Monroe, treasurer and Robert McLeod Jackson of Hamptonburgh, secretary. Mrs. Crist appointed the following committee chairmen: Hamlet S. Rowe of Chester, property; Bartow W. Bull of Stony Ford, picnic, and Dolly W. Booth of Campbell Hall, reception. Members Attend from Cleveland Undaunted by rain more than 250 members of the family gathered for a day of celebration. To Mrs. Clarence Bull and her grandson, Richard, of Cleveland, Ohio, went the prize for traveling the longest distance to attend the affair. Age honors were shared by eighty-eight year old Miss Sarah Smith of Central Valley, the oldest family member present and Lewis E. Brown, Jr., six-weeks-old resident of the Stone House. The youngest member was officially presented to the family during the day. During the business session it was decided to replace the roof at a cost of four hundred dollars which will be raised by donation. More than two hundred of the total was subscribed yesterday afternoon. The present slate roof has topped the Stone House for more than eighty years. The meeting opened with the singing of God Bless America led by William Tremper of Middletown. A hint of the tenseness of the international situation was injected into the family gathering when a telegram was read from Captain and Mrs. W. L. Nave of Honolulu, Hawaii, expressing their regret at not being able to attend the session. Last year, the Naves were awarded the prize for traveling the longest distance to the affair. Captain Nave is stationed with the United States Army in Honolulu. Charles W. Slaughter of Warwick and Henry P. Bull of Middletown were elected to the Board of Managers during the meeting. E. M. Bull of Monroe was redesignated to the board for another term. Children Play in Barn Children were entertained in the large barn in the rear of the house during the time of the business session by Miss Helen Hagen of New York City who conducted a series of songs, stories and games. From three until six the family adjourned to the large barn for an old fashioned dance. A picnic luncheon and supper were served in the house and in several outside buildings hastily converted into dining rooms to accommodate the large number of diners. While several of the out of town celebrants left immediately after the business session, the large number of County family members who arrived later in the day remained through the evening. A topic of interest was a collection of pictures of the various houses built by the Bull family in the County. The pictures, taken by George L. Seese of the Middletown Times Herald, afforded for some of the younger members of the family their first view of some of the historic houses. ________________________________________ Guide Affairs of Bull Family Another Year The Board of Managers of the Bull family posed for this picture (above) after the business session at the reunion in the Stone House in Hamptonburgh yesterday. Mrs. Louis E. Brown, mistress of the house, was assisted in receiving by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Bartow Wright Bull, of Stony Ford, and by her sisters, Mrs. Clarence H. Crist of Montgomery, and Mrs. J. Malcolm Bazemore of New York city. Most of the guests saw for the first time the restoration and other work recently completed by way of gifts to the Association. A partition which was not a part of the original stone work had been removed from the easterly end of the living room on the ground floor, making this latter room about 35 feet long. This room also now has a fireplace across its southeasterly corner with wooden paneling above and to the left of the fireplace, and the easterly window near the fireplace is now also in the living room. The walls of this room have been scraped and painted a cream color verging on yellow. The result is most satisfactory. The other ground floor walls have been similarly treated. The prominent old hand-wrought iron hinges and latches have been painted black and stand out attractively. A number of people were present who cannot come to the annual Association picnics because of absence from home in August, including, among others, Mrs. W. J. Kiggins of Summit, N. J., sister of Ernest M. Bull, the treasurer. The latter was also present. From a distance were Jackson Leroy Boughner of St. Paul and his bride of May 28. There were three visitors from Los Angeles, Mrs. Millicent Thrall and M... B. Elston and her daughter, Mi... ginia Elston.
