73rd ANNUAL BULL PICNIC Reckon in decades, come the day before, go the day after, have the free run of a two century-old house and a barn still older; let there be a steady down-pour of rain, with no disconcerting interludes of sunshine to keep you as unsettled as the weather, and you have a perfect recipe for a family picnic. Such was the 73rd annual Bull reunion held as usual on the last Wednesday in August at the Stone House. Many of us expected to gather at the Hamptonburgh Grange Hall, but the Hall had not been unlocked and car after car rolled down to the house. It was just as well. Rain evidently going to rain all day. Hamptonburgh was just where to meet as it was evidently going to rain all day. Hamptonburgh was just where to meet as it was evidently going to rain all day. Hamlet S. Roe, for many years president of the Association, said he did not like to see the party split into two parts, as always happens when we meet at the Grange Hall. Corinna Bull Brown, mistress of the Stone House, was there, having finished her work. Hamlet S. Roe turned the scale and the two hundred and more picnickers formed a happy throng, crowding the ground floor of the house, and overflowing to the other floors, the garage and the barn, where luncheons were spread for scores. When the important noonday refreshment feature had been finished, the children gathered in the barn for games with Miss Mildred Hagan, who has made just such the occasion from Philadelphia, having made an important part of our day for several years. As many of the rest of us as could, crowded into the house, where the business meeting was conducted by Amy Bull Crist, our president. Mrs. Crist has just been elevated from schoolmistress at Goodwill to Superintendent of Schools for the First Supervisory District of Orange County. She delighted the gathering with her gay conduct of the meeting. Referring to the bad weather, she said the Bulls could take it, and called upon Wm. H. Tremper of Middletown to open the proceedings by leading in the singing of "God Bless America." Three managers were elected for a three year term: Ernest M. Bull to succeed himself; Charles W. Slaughter and Henry P. Bull to succeed the latter's father, Harry Bull of Hamptonburgh, who has been a manager since our incorporation in 1921. The new Board of Managers met later in the afternoon and chose their officers for the coming year. Mrs. Crist made an earnest plea to be relieved as president as she has many pressing calls, but she does and we feel what she does she does and we could not reconcile ourselves to losing her at such short notice. She accordingly accepted a reelection by acclamation; Ernest M. Bull and Robert McLeod Jackson were reelected in the same manner as treasurer and secretary; and Henry P. Bull similarly chosen vice-president. Miss Sarah A. Smith of Central Valley, N. Y., aged 88 years, was our oldest member present. She sat in the wide hall and smilingly received her many who congratulated her on her presence. Mrs. Clarence Bull of Cleveland, Ohio, was awarded the blue ribbon for coming the greatest distance. Miss Dolly W. Booth spoke of progress made in adding to the late Stevenson H. Walsh's genealogical records. As usual there were many present who had never come before. Among them were: Mrs. Wm. G. Jones of Greenville, near Wilmington, Del., formerly Mildred Philips, of the line of Thomas, and her husband; Richard Collins and wife, and wife, two-year-old twin daughters, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Helen Johnston Kyte of Wellesley Hills, Mass. and her niece, Lumina Rapelye Johnston of Little Silver, N. J., both descendants of Mary Bull and Dr. John Johnston of Newburgh; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey McMonagle of Montgomery and Mrs. Dewitt McMonagle of Stony Ford. Dorothy Patterson Gleason of Drury Lane, N. Y. and her sister, Olga Hoag of Newright, N. Y. Mrs. Clarence Bell and her grandson, Richard Bell of Cleveland. Greetings were received from Mr. and Mrs. John Ireland Brush and the Misses Brush of Hempstead, L. I.; Mrs. Albert Lewis of Jamestown, N. Y.; Anne VanBuren Wolford, of Marion, Ohio; Phebe Bull Kilby of Santa Cruz; Margaret Eleanor and Wm. L. Nave and Rev. Hamilton Jackson of Felton, Calif., and Capt. dren of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. There was dancing in the barn from 3 to 6 p. m. for the young people, at which Marie Ellen Van Tassell of Middletown, was mistress of ceremonies. The picnic's lure was such that people started out in the rain, knowing that it would probably continue all day, and came from various distant places, including Greenville, Del., Little Silver, N. J., Fairfield, Hartford and Great Neck, Piermont, Hartsdale, Poughkeepsie and Deposit, N. Y.
