“Hill - Hold” – Aug. 15, 1921
This afternoon in seeing Mr. Ebenezer Bull, at the Stone House, he told me that his father had told him that the
work of building the house had been begun in 1722; Wm Bull was a contractor and therefore
thereafter therefore could only work on his own house when not engaged on his contracts. In 1724 there
was an earthquake which cracked the stone work on the east face of the building. This crack is still
apparent and therefore we can safely say that the wall was up at least that far by 1724.
But the house was not entirely completed till 13 years after it was begun — How 1727 came to
be considered the date of the building Mr. Bull is not sure — He says that if may have been wholly enclosed by
that date.
Mr. Bull also states that the wood work in the top story gives evidence of later workmanship than that
below —
His father derived from some
Long Island history that there was
an earthquake in 1724 —

the report had come from. PHS – 1966)
