Scope and Content

Mr. John M. Mc...[illegible] Jackson 165 Bway New York City, — Dear Bob: Yours in regard to John Elton. ——— Will say I consider him a responsible party, and no doubt will pay you any rent he agrees to pay. He is sober and industrious, and I guess a good citizen generally. His farming methods are not approved of by the general public but I guess he gets along about as well as any of us poor "tillers of the soil." His present Landlady - Mrs Margaret R. Costigan of 71 Lexington Ave. N.Y. would no doubt give you a better idea as to John's qualities as a tenant and farmer. Go and call on her tell her who you are etc: she will treat you well; and her husband the doctor is a very entertaining gentleman — and you will be glad of his acquaintance. Sorry your farm buyers are not coming this way— perhaps you can find others who are wanting such a Farm & willing to pay the price. Mr. Titus the new owner of Stony Ford Farm has sold many of the horses and as yet made no signs of replenishing the stock, Has made some changes in the house, and has plowed a part of the pasture field in front of the house for additional garden. Hear he wants to sell the buildings on the Valentine Hill Farm & the Virgil Crist set of buildings. Mrs. Mott's auction was largely attended the highest bid on farm was $8100, which was not accepted. Your neighbor Wm Fealy bid $3600. on it, Mrs Mott & Mrs Munn are living in part of house with Emmet Helms leaving the old Mott home quite deserted. Water is scarce, tho. our pond still supplies the cows and the well holds good, many are complaining and praying for rain, Mr Bride Johnson was here to day, said he had been to your place looking it over with a view of renting it, but his complaint was water. This letter has grown considerably beyond what I intended when I began it, but these little matters came to mind, so I just wrote them down thinking they might be of interest to you and your Mother & Eleanor My wife and children accept with pleasure "your kindest regards" and return the same to you. None of us have forgotten the pleasant days we had with you, your candy, and the kind attention you gave my wife, for she certainly had a very stiff neck. We spent last evening at "Sam" Eager's he entertained about 70 friends at cards, and such good eating! Ebenezer & wife rode with Mary and I, behind "Old Major". Father and I were in Goshen yesterday afternoon called to see Frank Drake, who is quite seriously ill, Saw his wife as Dr. says no one could see him; she says his improvement is slow and will probably not be able to work again, talk of forming a stock company to carry on the newspaper. Called on Floyd Crane, and saw John Wallace on the street, —Judge Sweezy too gave us a few minutes, We were looking up one William Y. Bull's pedigree for 'Skin' Walsh of Albany. This Wm Bull was a harness maker in Goshen many years ago, Did you ever know that Bulls were harness makers before? Give them our best regards and wish you each a Merry X Mass & Happy New Year. Very Respectfully Yours— Bart. Dec 4 14
