"$335.35 Received on the within obligation my share of interest to date April 1st 1870. Three hundred and thirty five dollars & thirty five cents. Anna B. Weekes"
Observations
The Parties: The bond was issued by Ebenezer Bull in 1867. The payments are being made to women who appear to be family members (likely daughters or sisters), given the shared last names of Bull, Shur, Hawkins, and Weekes.
Jennie vs. Jane: One recipient is listed as "Jane H. Shur" in 1870 but signs as "Jennie H. Shur" in later entries.
Fractions: The cents are often written as fractions over 100 (e.g., 10068 or 10012)
Key Financial Details
Nature of Debt: Referred to as a "within obligation," the document tracks annual interest payments and the occasional payout of "principal shares."
Payment Schedule: Payments were remarkably consistent, almost always settled on or around April 1st of each year.
Transition of Ownership: Early entries (1877) show Sarah B. Hawkins and Jennie H. Shaw being paid out their "share in full," after which the debt was maintained primarily by Phebe Bull and Anna B. Weekes.
Primary Stakeholders
Person Role/Activity
Phebe Bull The most consistent recipient; signed for interest nearly every year from 1877–1897.
Anna B. Weekes Co-recipient with Phebe; active from 1878 through the final entry in 1899.
Amy B. Uptegrove Appears later in the timeline (starting 1890), specifically noting dollar amounts like $75 and $50.
Sarah B. Hawkins Received her final share and exited the agreement in November 1877.
Document Significance
This ledger is a classic example of 19th-century private financing within a family or small community. Instead of a bank, individuals often lent money to one another, and the back of the original contract (the "within obligation") was used to track decades of compliance.
