Dear Father & Family
We received your letter yesterday and although I have but little time to write I thought I should simply tell you our plans and tell the news when we see you.
Agreeably to your kind invitation we will (health permitting) come up on 7th day next (19th inst) in the 4 o’clock P.M. train. We ought bring from home as you are coming down to Phila, but I will state the reason for our coming at this time. The Steamer Baltic sails on 7th day the next due will be the “Etruria” as we do our work on her it can stay in the country two weeks. At any other time I could stay but one. So you see it is sufficient after all. But I am sure you will excuse me, as we want to come very much. Emma looks very well but the very hot weather we have is debilitating and she thinks the country will do her so much good. Anna says she intends to stay a month, but I am in hope she will get tired of you before that time & “vice versa.” She intends to discharge her “help” and lock up the shanty. Anna has become heartily tired of her and thinks it a good chance now. I must tell you a little episode that occurred while we were on a visit to the Island. Our neighbor Batam informed us that Edgie had a party, the sailors were thrown open to her illustrious guests. She got up an elegant tea—shortcake—sponge cake—strawberries etc. etc.—and they no doubt enjoyed themselves hugely. We only learned these facts yesterday and Anna was so angry she didn’t know hardly what to say to such an unparalleled piece of audacity and dishonesty, she shall learn, but before she goes I intend to recall her memory to the subject in very plain language. I never could not imagine what dreams of the Glorious & Super so much being traced in so short a space of time until these facts transpired. I sometimes think this Outlaw the vilest (and this word disgraced the name of humanity or polluted the pedestal on which virtue — William Randolph has been to see us and he wants us to visit Newburgh on our way to Flushing, go up with him some other day and spend first day in Newburgh, but you shall find contradiction to disagree and we can’t wait so long. We are glad (under the circumstances) that you did not send the butter. We send much love to all and want to see you all very much.
Yours affectionately,
S B Weeks
