The Recipient and Grant
Grantee: Captain William Bull
Total Acreage: 1,800 acres
Grant Purpose: These lands were "bounty lands," typically awarded to officers and soldiers who served in the Revolutionary War as a form of payment or reward for their service.
Property Description
The grant consists of three separate 600-acre lots located in the Central New York Military Tract. In 1790, this area was part of Montgomery County (which at the time covered a massive portion of the state):
Lot 86 in the Township of Hannibal (600 acres)
Lot 79 in the Township of Ulysses (600 acres)
Lot 14 in the Township of Tully (600 acres)
Historical Significance
Signatures: The document is signed by George Clinton, the first Governor of New York and later the 4th Vice President of the United States.
The "Gold and Silver" Clause: Note the line: "EXCEPTING and RESERVING to ourselves all gold and silver mines." This was a standard legal reservation by the State at the time.
The Settlement Condition: The grant came with a "use it or lose it" clause. Captain Bull was required to make an "actual settlement" (build a home and improve the land) within seven years, or the grant would become void.
Dates: The patent was signed on July 9, 1790, in the "fifteenth year of our INDEPENDENCE."
Value $600.00
