Sixth Mo 13th 1856 Dear Mother We had been looking for a letter from you for some time, as we were anxious to hear if the bucket & tubs arrived safe and in time. We are getting along very nicely. Anne’s health is quite as good as usual, and mine also. All our friends are enjoying good health as far as I know. Our garden is coming on very nicely. We have had lettuce, pie plant, radishes &c all of our own raising, and have a fine lot of tomato plants set out, growing rapidly. The little peach tree hangs full. We are just in the midst of strawberry time, and I very much wish you could have some since strawberries & ice cream I suppose you will have plenty soon. We had one of the sheep boiled for dinner yesterday and it was first rate the best I ever tasted Anna could hardly get enough it tasted so good. Did the young folks from Long Island come up last 7th day, Anna went to the station and waited for two or three trains but saw nothing of them. She wanted to find grandmothers shawl gloves & she had a note pinned in the shawl. We want to know how Effie and Dan get along if it is likely to make a match please let us know. We should like to have her make us a visit upon her return. please tell us how (incomplete sentence) We have no ship in port at present and I have nothing much to do. I wish we were with you now the country must look very beautiful I should think. Have you heard from Charles, or is he home by this time. I hope so. We had a very pleasant visit from Uncle Stephen & Aunt Betsy, also Phebe Miller, they only stayed one night. Julia Lawson spent last first day with us I wish Phebe could have been here. we had lots of fun. Phebe do come and see us we want to see thee very much, as well as all the rest in Ann & Nicholas have been to see us they send their love to Phebe. the weather is foggy this morning but rather pleasant. [business?] of most kinds is lively. The Buchananocracy had a great time in the park night before last. burnt lots of powder, fired off rockets and other fireworks. Senator Douglas, (Northern Doughface) addressed the ruffianocracy and they wound up about where they commenced—all amounted to just nothing. Accept our best love to father & thyself and to all the family & friends. Please write to us ere long. Affectionately thine, D. C. Baker P.S. The ‘Ericsson’ has been telegraphed and is now coming up the lower bay. She brings 5 or 6 days later news from Europe. if there is anything important I will send Father a paper. D.C.B.
