New York Sept 8th / 57 Dear Sister Martha Writing a letter, as well as talking a sermon - it is necessary sometimes to have a text, and I have taken the pains to choose a favorite one of mine - "So with "wide awake" for a motto, I’ll go ahead - I supposed the girls told you all the news but I will try to pick up something - the most important event that has transpired lately, was the departure of Ellen our gal last evening she was so dumb and knew so little about work that Anna had to do more than half - and a few days since she told Ellen that Tell Father the Atlantic is expected to make a trip the latter part of this week - I may go with her Received Rob and Mary's cards a few days since they are on their "wedding tour" now - Mary and "mister" are now home or expected every day - We intend to call on them - We have had a visit from Uncle Joseph Booth & Aunt Phebe also Dolly Lamier - Tell Hannah Uncle Joey said come and see us when you "kin" - I thought of her sight away - It seems as if I could almost fly up there I want to see you all so much - but fear I must wait - Our garden looks very pretty I wish the count drops in to see us - we have made great improvement - got a nice new fence between us and Isatova [?] of painted it "drab" as being most suitable for a nice family - all of us send lots of love to all of you and want them to write soon Thy affectionate brother RMH Pretty near full isn't it? Please answer all my questions will thee (if you like it) (4th page now if) luck she could do better or she did not want her after the month was up - but Ellen begged to stay for four dollars a month so Anna told her she might try another month - but Isatova told her that she could get her a place where she could get six dollars and finally she told us she was going to leave - that Bridget is a meddlesome mischief making girl and I shall tell her so Anna speaks to any girl she may have in the house again, Otherwise we are not sorry she has gone and were it not for washing so Anna says she would not have another in the house, they are certainly the most deceitful things in the world - than Irish - I don’t think we shall get another girl before we come in the Country for Anna & Lizzie talk of coming up in July when the vacation comes - (I have received no letter from Charley yet) (How do you like to watch the pigs now) Commenced - At Raines last evening so that he could not stay at home - and consequently we went in to visit "Isatova" they said they liked Martha very much Lizzie was so quiet - In Isatova's "Raini" if it was "Martha" she would be talking all the time - but he only intended it for a compliment - as he is fond of lively folks - I cannot say much about the old Beany Martha, for Littlehill has gone far, far away - and "lunch boxes" have not come our way often - money by the by Anna bought a silk dress of him a short time since - very pretty green ground with dark stripe she says tell "Bac" there is no new fashion to send her - And just tell Bac for me that I am really hungry for a wedding and if the necessary arrangement can be made we will try to be on hand in July - usually a warm month - in those parts - I had so much cough - weather is now in
