Cousin May
Yours of 1st just came to hand in due time filled with information that interests me very much and I can hardly realize that you are my cousin all this time and learned me about when I knew nothing of you and your age. Perhaps you remember the house in which I was born at Wealth’s Mills not far from the Snatch Mills road, and do you remember when father moved to Salisbury Mills and fitted up the first paper‑mill in 1823. I was born in Nov. 1822 and you no doubt remember Uncle Stephen Henry Thomas the half brothers now all gone to the great majority except Henry. John is buried at Rhineams? & Tyrus at Stamford Conn. Thomas in Yolo Co. Cal. James at Mad river Conn. Then came James, Richard, Lewis, Mary, Lucy, Timothy, 1839. Lewis died at Salisbury, Richard in April 1858, Mary in Cal. 1878. May was buried near our house which is near the foot of Uncle Geo. Atwood’s grave near the back corner of the M.E. Church at Vails Gate, New Windsor. August 1885. I am the left of my mother’s family. You are about 8 years older when mother was married at or near West July Church Oct. 24, 1813. Where was you and do you remember about it, who performed the service? Who did you come with, mother? Who officiated when father & mother were married?
I have a letter written by my grandfather John Catharin to my father 20th Aug. 1805 from 211 Greenwich Street N.Y.
…which he speaks of father’s sister Eliza keeping house at 211 Greenwich St. Is this the sister you speak of as marrying Sylvenus Drinberry who went west to Chemung Co. and lived at Elmira in 1855? Aunt Polly married Samuel Drinberry, his brother I suppose. My Grandfather John Lathaw was born in 1755 at 133 Cherry Street N.Y. City. No. 40 & 42 Cherry St., a piece of property which was occupied by the Lathaws since 1704 over 100 years and the building standing now is over 180 years old. I saw it in 1860. Daniel Lathaw, father’s uncle, died near 100 years of age in 1800, built a negro church in Greenwich during 1796 — was called the Sons of 1836. Ended Workmen (storm?) and William IV King of Great Britain with Admiral Digby and the other officers on horseback rode through Cherry St. past this house to visit trumpets the building & vessels of war. Lathaws were ship builders. John Lathaw married Mary Waters by whom he had two children Sarah Lathaw 1774 and Wm. Lathaw 1776 and she died in 1784 and John Lathaw married again in 1785 Sarah Newton by whom he had five children viz. Reham in 1786, Eliza 1787, John 1788, Sarah 1789, Thomas 1790 who died in Valparaiso Chile S.A. in 1854 during an earthquake and this I presume is the Eliza Franklyn (Phs.?). I have a copy of Summons from Supreme Court N.Y. Simeon Ryder and Ann Eliza his wife against Sylvenus Drinberry & Polly his wife, W. G. Drinberry wife, Hugh Lathaw & Eliza his wife, Sarah Lathaw, John Lathaw & whole host of Drinberrys, Lathaws and others to settle this point question of Cherry Street. Col. Ryder lived at Rock Island Ill., was a lawyer & Railroad director, married a granddaughter of Lancaster Sterling & Elizabeth Boyd. Lathaw daughter of John Lathaw & Rebecca Bonner was our daughter but dear me I want some help to get up this tree.Relationships
