Brooklyn Fifth Day
Dear Sister
I am much gratified to get a letter from you, and am very sorry to hear Mother is so miserable. I wish she was here, I think Brooklyn air would help her, it is a long time since she was here and we want to see her very much indeed, now Father, Mother, Lizzie & Eddie come & spend the Holidays with us, for Sammie cannot leave to come, if they all want to come, that’s as bad as any, have not got the cough medicine yet, have not found anyone that could tell me where to get it – but cousin Elias says Jack knows, will endeavor to see him soon. Poor Julia Coleman is no more, it don’t seem possible, how dreadfully they must feel, she was sick a short a time, poor girl, we trust she her gain, it must have seemed like the time that night.
Bothie & Charley Hanson were there, Hannah I presume. Schuyler is all right, the Pears & plums are very nice have had some two or three times also the pickles and the butter is super excellent never tasted better, we would think Mother would give herself a great deal of uneasiness for fear Phila would be a little exposed to us when we are already much – could – has too much expose to anybody get. Sammie brought home. a good warm shawl from the Seaman “free gratis for nothing of course.” she wears that to church. She has not been able to go to the meeting yet on account of the weather. I may say it poured the three last Firstdays it rained so hard. Ed Carswell was here last evening said Jonas Eddy’s Mother was dead. Julia sent for us to come a minute & for Charlie to stay until Second day & went Julia & a cousin Abby & with us one day next week. Emily did not tell us one word about the wedding I heard Matilda asking something about it & Em replied, she had to go from home to hear news. Sat day come up to the wedding we would not go without an invitation. How does Mother make out to eat. I think she must come down here to get oysters and fish, they don’t require chewing. Are very glad to hear Charlie is doing so well. How does he like it? Susan Briggs came here last Second day we staid all night – I bet it exactly about the evening have got Annie almost close & commenced one for Phebe. I sent Libbie Jenny or Hannah want any? I just finished my dinner had baked apple dumplings, have good. They were too. Did you ever make any, here is our receipt. Take one tumbler of water, small teacup of soda, 2 of cream tartar and the size of a small egg – that quantity will make 7 dumplings (enough for Tom) try it. Samuel had a letter from Aunt Martha Wilbur this week giving us a perfect invitation to make them a visit. says she has got 10 lbs of nice feathers for us, besides the bedding, says she will try to make it pay if we will come, wants Phebe to come the see here on this leaf
so far we feel very anxious to hearRelationships
