JAMES C. BEECHER C O P Y LAW OFFICES ----------- German-American Bank Building Buffalo, N.Y. October 21st, 1907. Mr. William H. Cuddeback, 420 Ellicott Square, My dear Sir:- In regard to the Dower Estate of Mrs. Samuel B. Greene about which we have had several interviews, I have all along as I have told you, been in favor of settling with Mrs. Greene and dis- posing finally of her interest in Mr. Greene's estate by a payment of a gross sum, and I am now corresponding with the other parties who are interested in the estate in order if possible to obtain their assent to such a settlement of the matter. Of course one of the principal things to be considered will be the farm and residence at Walkill. This place was bought by Mr. Greene who gave a mortgage for $1990.00, part of the purchase price, and built a dwelling house and barn and other buildings at an expense of several thousand dollars, intending to make it his permanent home. The transfer tax appraisers who were intelligent and well informed men, appraised the property at Five thousand dollars, and their appraisal was accepted by the local representative of the Comptroller and by the State's Attorney and Appraiser as a fair valuation, and we are willing to accept it as such. This property will have to enter upon any compromise which may be arrived at as a part of the consideration in the adjustment of the amount to be paid. We suppose that the widow desires to obtain it for her family home for herself and her nieces, and it is upon this point only that there is likely to be any serious question raised by my clients. If this matter can be adjusted between us satisfactorily, I think I can induce my people to come to my views. Otherwise we will have to carry on this long and tedious litigation. Please let me have your views upon the various phases and the questions raised in the litigation, and very much oblige, Yours truly, James C. Beecher [signed]
