Dear Betty I wrote the accompanying note last week – but did not send it and since then we have heard of our dear friend Stephen’s miraculous escape from sudden death – we have truly and deeply sympathised with thee in thy peculiar feelings at this time – and rejoice that in the faithfulness of our Heavenly Father he has so preserved and protected the life of his servant – surely his promise is to those who put their trust in Him “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee” and he never will leave Stephen to the mercy of the destroyer — but it will be a long time before thou can recover from such a shock to thy nerves — how fortunate it was that you had so many good friends around you at the time — we were looking for Stephen down before we heard what had occurred but now I suppose thou will not feel like sparing him from home as much as thou used to — not but that all will be quite as safe in the same strong Almighty string of power as before, but that thou will have more nervous fears to struggle with — I want very much to see you both again and hope after the weather is cooler some time next month if all should be well, that I may have the privilege once more — we have not heard again from E Collins — Sarah Wood has written to him — Mother and Betsy send their love to I and thyself said to thy mother and father — Thy sincere friend Phebe Stephen H Bull Oxford A hired man shot at Stephen Bull and missed.
