Dear Father
By filling a sheet we think to get the worth of our money – so I will tell thee how we are getting along with our steamship affairs – The "Adriatic" is now at the Canal St Dock and we have about 150 men employed on board of her working in gangs alternately night and day – Of course I have my hands full of business especially when there is another steamer there – the probabilities now are that she will be ready for sea in a month but there has been ah many vexatious delays that it is as yet impossible to state precisely the time – I should be glad to have thee and all the rest see her – hope thee will be down in time – I have been round to see Cousin Wm's new cow stable this afternoon – it will be of course a fine affair when finished – he is going to keep some fowls also – it is very fine to have all these things but very expensive in the City – We are all getting along as well as can be expected, the little darkey and all. Love to all affectionately

First day afternoon 18??
Dear Sister Annie Cousin Mary and Willie brought over your very kind letter yesterday morning. Our reason for not writing was altogether through a mistake. Anna told ??to write the next morning after Ann got here, but he was so busy he could not find time to do it, and forgotten to say anything about we thought he had written. We got you letter Seventh day, telling that Ann would be here Second day. We had engaged Mary to come and wash Second and [?] wishing Ann to form acquaintances right away Sammie went and seen if Mary could not get someone to work, she was very glad to get off for so many wanted her, Our school commenced the day that Ann came. Jennie Smith and myself went to school, Anna to the Depot, and Aunt Samantha to Isaac Carpenters to spend the day. I came home at Recess found Anna, ?, Ebridrdge all safe and sound. Ann get along pretty well just as leave make a coal fire now as a wood one [Page 2 ]
We have just finished an elegant dinner of Chickens, ? and sweet Potatoes, cold slaw, Bread and butter, and Tea. Rice Pudding and Watermelon for dessert, had no company to dinner but Aunt Deborah Carpenter is here now. Anna told Sammie to write for you he send the yolk pattern for an undergarment, with point in the shoulder, she has not over for your silks yet but is going sometime this week. We do not see much of Cousin Williams folks. ED was around last night-but we were all to bed so did not go down, but came this forenoon, would not stay to dinner. Sammie and Anna were to go round there this afternoon but Anna backed out. Sammie has gone Anna has not been here once since she came home. Clara has not been here but once since I came home, Cousin Wes and Ester , Norman, Julia and Tom Bailey, have all been there, cousin W I E ? went to Pokeepsie to stay a few day when she returned Cousin William & Mary, cousin W K E were going to Boston but something prevented Cousin William from going so they give it up, and have gone up all except ?? she and Jennie & Ed were around here on night last week.
Anna, Jennie Smith and Aunt Samantha went over to see the Steamer. Adriatic yesterday, I had seen the Atlantic once and so did not care to go.
Rachael Bagart was here yesterday a little while, did not take off her things, she had had a chill the day before and H??? was not very well he did not have chills but she thought it was from the effects of th??
page 3 We where very glad to hear about the butter, for we have had to buy ever since I came home, but they would not let me write about it. I believe I have no more news to write now must answer this soon as possible Lizzie
Dear Martha I have got lots of stuff to tell you but not on paper. I like my school and school mates a great deal better than I did before Emily Lockwood, Mary Soules, Erin Mason, Martha Hermance. ?? are all the large girls that come. Maggie Gilmore is coming, we have a new teacher very pleasant but firm, keeps first strict order. Miss Blyth likes her very much better than any other teacher she ever had. Miss Alice Eldridge has started for England, started with her kitten but it escaped out of her basket before she got on the Ferry-boat, she told the little boy around there she would give them a shilling if they would find her but they could not Blyth to go down to the Ferry and look for her, but they could not, so she ? on board the Steamer for Miss Blyth to go down to the ferry and look for her Miss Blyth did not go. Emily Lockwood is very nicely fixed there with Miss Blyth they board with the family, Emily thinks of Goshen pretty often and the folks ? it. I have not written half I want to say so you but one thing more, and have been looking for Carrie ? here for two weeks past, but as she has not come we have given up looking for her, you must all excuse this letter as it is so long I have got completely worn out write me one as long. Lizzie
P.S. (on side) P.S. you must stop scolding about our not writing for we I have only got two letters from you since Anna came home and we do not know how many we have written, they are past writing. LizRelationships
