Miss Mary Van Keuren told the story that she recalled her Grandfather Miller Van Keuren telling of an Indian raid on his grandfather
Van Keuren’s house (now the stone bldg. near the home of Lewellyn Secord at [illegible]) — the house was barricaded &
the houses Indians — but one of the Indians shot at Mrs. Van Keuren (formerly Margaret Miller), having apparently
seen thru the opening in the barricade — (Mrs. Van Keuren wore a white lace cap) — Miss Van Keuren seized a rifle &
returned the fire — It was not until the house was [illegible] that the result of the shooting could be told next morning —
It was then found that blood was on the balls at the site & later it was learned that an Indian Chief had been killed —
& the bullet of Miller Van Keuren has the [illegible] which was used — Miss Van Kuren also — her brother (Henry) — brother
Miller Van Kuren often spoke in their hearing that when he was 10 years old an Indian family had their wigwam like one winter
at a spring near the house on the ground now used as a garden just west of the Van Kuren house (formerly Fleury’s). At that
time the house occupied by the family was a 2‑story house on the hill where the Van Kuren houses now are. Miller Van Kuren’s
family was then building the present Miller Van Kuren house. This spring is mentioned in Egger’s History.
