Re Geo. Bull & the sloop
Told me by Mrs. E. Bull — 10/14/23
Many years ago, the number he could not fix, the [planners?] who sent their produce by sloop to N.Y.C. considered that they were being charged too high — and to relieve themselves built a sloop of their own. They put a young man named Geo. Bull in chg. of this. He, Mr. E.B., that must have been a grandson of Wm. & Sarah, but whose son he did not know —
On a certain occasion G.B. had on board with him his fiancee then, parents — a severe storm arose on the Hudson and overturned the vessel — and most on board were drowned, inc’g the young lady [fiancee?]. Bull escaped alive — but was so distressed that he went away from the scene & was miserable (as seemed probable).
That is to set out over N.Y. He there led a sort of hermit life, but responded to a call to attend a barn raising — at the raising he badly injured his foot with an axe and no doctor in the family to be cured — a young woman there nursed him and he fell in love with & married her — from this pair the Bulls of that section sprang —
One of them is Mrs. Geo. Phillips, Schenectady, whose husband is kin to Mrs. Ebenezer Bull — all their relationship, Mrs. E.B. supposed that they could on these relatives — they did so & Mrs. E. Bull found that they were thus kin — Mrs. Phillips (better?) told him the story — as Mr. Bull himself had already always — "heard it, as set out above, and referred to the George Bell as his grandfather — He also added that his family did not know the story — the circumstances had evidently been kept secret from father soon —
The story as afterwards raised where that Mr. E.B.'s family got from it to show for their investment was a glass decanter which is now at the Stone House —
