W. Sheldon Bull Stories — 1925
His father Thomas Alexander Bull, son of Milton Bull of Bullville, was sent as a young fellow in his teens to live with the Rev. John Johnson in Newburgh while he studied medicine with Dr. Johnson (?). While he was there, Aunt Rachael Bull came to visit her sister Mrs. Johnson and the latter invited Mrs. Belknap, a Newburgh lady, to meet her. “John” told Aunt R. that Mrs. B. was deaf so that she must speak very loud to her; tho’ Mrs. B was sensitive about it and did not admit she was deaf. He told the same tale to Mrs. B. about Aunt R. Thus these two tiny ladies, who carried themselves very comely, were shouting away at each other needlessly — they finally discovered the trick.
“John” did not think it was & came home for supper that night, but he was taken sick with quinsy. Dr. Johnson was very emotional; he called “John” into his study and wept and prayed over him for two hours.
In the winter John went down to N.Y. to take a course in medical college and while there grew a moustache. This was considered a French custom and wicked and immoral — Mr. had a daguerreotype of himself with the moustache taken, but had the latter shaved before returning to Newburgh. Mr. showed this picture to the Johnston girls, however, and they giggled over it to such an extent that it came to his father’s attention. Again he had occasion to weep and pray over — this way with him in his study.
Cousin Granny Ann Bell — (wife of James Denniston Bell) told W. S. B. that when a small child she had been taking some butter walking not some others of the children by Sarah Wells — S.B. pouted & fretted and told her the children kept quiet. They however ran around and yelled — and S.B. turned away and went & spanked her.Relationships
