This one is a true treasure. What you have here is a gentleman posing with his dog!
The Challenge: Getting a dog to sit completely still for the 10 to 30 seconds required for an exposure back in the 1850s was incredibly difficult. Photographers often had to have the owner hold the pet tightly, or use tricks to keep their attention. If you look closely at the dog's head, it might be just a tiny bit softer or blurrier than the man due to the dog breathing or shifting during the countdown.
The Case: This is a classic "book-style" leather or pressed-paper case. The left side features a gorgeous, vibrant red velvet or plush pad stamped with an elegant floral/scrollwork design. When closed, this pad pressed gently against the glass of the photo to keep it secure and dust-free.
The Framing: The brass mat on this one uses a beautiful arch-top shape with deeply textured, stippled corners, a design heavily popularized throughout the mid-to-late 1850s.
Finding mid-19th-century cased photographs featuring pets is much rarer than standard portraits, making that second piece a highly collectible and charming slice of history!
