Dear Miss Booth—
I hope you will pardon my long delay in replying to your letter—which unfortunately had been mislaid until this morning.
I have no photograph at the present time but my war record is very simple and can be given in a few words.
I enlisted in the U.S.N.R.F. May 2, 1917 and was ordered into active service on October 2nd. My rank was Seaman 1st Class. Until June 1918 I was a confidential messenger for the Naval Intelligence Officer of the Third Naval District. I then succeeded in obtaining a transfer to Class 3 of the reserve — the Navy Transport Service — with rank of Quartermaster 2nd class. During the summer of 1918 I made two trips to South America for training on a merchant vessel, the Caracas of the Red D Line. After this I had two months special training at Pelham Bay and was commissioned Ensign on November 3rd 1918. At the time of the armistice I was in New York waiting assignment to a transport and consequently never saw any service on the other side, being released from active service early in December.
You may be sure that I will keep the last Wednesday of August in mind and if possible will attend the picnic.
Sincerely yours
G. Howard Chamberlin Jr.
